A Brighter Future for the Web!

Wanna know what this is all about?

Well it's about the new Firefox OS (operating system) for mobiles!

Mozilla is introducing it this July.

Now I am a fan of Mozilla, their innovation, and their efforts to provide products without the restrictions of other competing products,

Firefox OS is the first web based mobile operating system and it’s designed to give more people access to the Web from more places and in more ways than ever before. 
Built entirely using open standards (as Mozilla says), Firefox OS is free from the rules and restrictions of existing proprietary platforms (also, as Mozilla puts it).

And that's not all!

Mozilla also announced the first smartphones to run using the new Firefox OS, the ZTE Open and Alcatel One Touch Fire.

I am a proud user of the FireFox browser.

Happy 40th Birthday Cell Phones!

Can you believe that?
The first cell phone call was actually made 40 years ago (April 3rd 1973).

When were you introduced to cell phones?
I remember I bought my first cell phone on April 2001,
That's 12 years ago. I remember it was a dark blue Siemens A35 model (Siemens Cell phones division is closed now).

Ever since then I could not live without  a cell phone, in fact, there was a time when I carried a bunch of them around!

I remember how expensive cell phones, and SIM cards were at the beginning of their introduction.
Look how cheap, and spread they are.

Such technologies sometimes makes you ask, how did we live before Cell phones and the internet??

Yes that's right, Quer, and not Queer!
Sorry for the bad language, and sorry for not reviewing and posting for sometime now.

Let's have a fresh start this year, and let's start with an interesting website that I stumbled upon (and I do that a lot actually).

There is no specific technical category for Quertime.
It is full of articles that you will for sure find both interesting and useful.

Quertime says it provides useful websites, tools, tips, tools, and freebies.

you can find articles such as "13 Tips to Extend Your Smartphone Battery Life "

or " 9 Online Tools to Create Custom Maps and Get Directions" .

But personally, I find articles that provide lists  as the last one mentioned above, to be what you find most on Quertime.com.

So, I recommend liking their Facebook page, so you can follow them up, I'm sure you'll find lots of interesting technical stuff.

ATARI's 40th Anniversary

And a happy Anniversary it is!

It's the 40 Anniversary for ATARI!

I'm sure some of you remember the above console, or may be you were even addicted to it!

 

Until not long ago, people in my country kept referring to video games by "ATARI", weather they played it on consoles or computers, they would say, I want to play "ATARI", or I am the champion of "ATARI".

This is a simple evidence that ATARI people (and Mr. Nolan Bushnell in particular) are the pioneers of Video games.

An industry full of fun and innovation for decades now.

I'm new to this industry, but personally, I hope I can add to it in a way to be memorable for people.

But for now, let us all wish ATARI many happy returns of the day :)

How to make a screencast for free

I came across this post when I was exploring ways to make a video for my Mobile Game ( Bombs Juggle ).

There are many ways, and a lot of software to record your computer screen, or make any video.

As a Mac user, QuickTime player was mostly used for playing media files, I didn't know that you can also use it to record your screen along with your voice! (You can also record your voice by itself too).

Million dollar sales from home

This is directed to both coders and graphic designers.

I'm sure you thought about selling your work on a market place on the web.
If not, how does it sound like to have your code snippets, or wordpress themes sold multiple times on the web?

envato has multiple sites specialized just for that.
(envato has a number of interesting sites that are great technical  resources, we did review some of envato sites, check the one we posted about mobiletuts+).


An example of these sites is ThemeForest.


The interesting news that I read today was there was an author who was selling his themes on ThemeForest for three years now, actually became the first to complete a million dollar worth of sales!

Make Use Of

Love the title?
You might ask: "Make Use of what?".
Well, make use of the technology of course! (this is a technical blog, remember?).


One of the coolest resources on the web!


I came across it when I was looking for gaming resources.


MakeUseOf is more of a resource that contains ways and guides to how to use technology, not how to build it.


For example, the article that I came across on MakeUseOf introduced platforms for building games that I didn't hear of, but I didn't find an article that contains programming or developing tips.


It also contains news, tips, some Geeky fun stuff, and the best part in my opinion, the "Guides".

HTML Goodies

This is probably one of the oldest sites on the web that is still live online.
HTML Goodies started on 1992 (I remember I first logged in online in 1997!)

At that time, the internet was just in its beginning, and HTML Goodies wanted to teach people HTML and how to build websites.

Despite the simplicity of the web site and its subject, HTML Goodies has evolved to include subjects beyond HTML.

It now includes subjects such as CSS, ASP, JavaScript, you name it!
Any thing that is connected to web building, and it is mostly targeted towards beginners.

So pay it a visit ( http://www.htmlgoodies.com/ ), and start with the "getting started" link on the left block of the web site. (this is where the index of the tutorials is).

The Site Wizard

Remember one the first sites that I reviewed was W3SCHOOLS.COM (check out the following post: http://techfountains.blogspot.com/2009/09/web-building-for-beginners.html )

I called it web building for beginners.

W3SCHOOLS is still is a very good place to start learning how to build websites.

Yet, you might just need more than that.

Here, not only do you start learning how to build a website, you also learn how to choose a domain, register it, find a host, publish your website on a host, and even how to make revenue from your website.

I came across The Site Wizard when I was searching for a tutorial for Dreamweaver (a powerful web design software from Adobe).

They are flooded with tutorials, and as they say, these articles and tutorials that they have are intended  for "people just starting out as webmasters".

So I guess this site is a step up from W3SCHOOLS.

Check it out, and don't get fooled by their old style interface and lack of animation or graphics.

After all, as someone seeking knowledge, it is the content that matters :-)

Infinite USB memory

Sounds like a dream?

Let's say that you are a Torrent maniac, you just can't stop downloading all these movies, songs, TV shows etc.

You end up with Giga, if not Tera, bytes of data that you just don't know where to store!

You might try burning DVD's, but then you shall have to buy special furniture to keep stored and unscratched.

You might buy multiple external hard drives, and fill them up one by one.

Sounds crazy? or may be it sounds like a bad dream?

Actually, this is a reality that I witness with many of my friends.

So what to do?

one of my favorite TV shows introduced an interesting gadget, the "infinite USB memory".

Looks much like a USB flash memory stick, but actually doesn't have any memory on it.

It has a full computer hardware (it has its own CPU, RAM, WiFi..etc.).

What you do with it is first pair it with your laptop (a one time set up procedure), then plug it into your DVD player, TV, or just any device that has a USB port.

The infinite USB memory then uses every storage device that can be accessed from your lap top as its storage capacity (this includes your laptop's hard drive, external hard disks, or any other computer or server that can be accessed by your computer).

You can of course control the capacity, and the files that want to share with this memory.

Useful Google tips and tricks

This was published on the Google fan page on Facebook.
It reminds me with the old "Google Cheat Sheet", where certain words, if mentioned in the search box, can bring you targeted results.
These words were listed in the cheat sheet.
I remember, for example, the inurl word, if you enter inurl:techfountains it will list the websites/pages that have techfountains in their URL. (try it out).
